Call of theWwild
The Call of the Wild by: Jack London Often in literature a particular setting contributes to the understanding of the major conflict. Such a work of literature is The call of the wild by: Jack London, a novel about a dog named Buck, who is the main character of the story and his adventure from a quiet and rural home in the Santa Clara valley in California to this bitterly cold Alaskan wilderness to serve as a sled dog. Buck is ripped from his secure environment in the beginning of the novel and slowly it is shown how he transforms from a domestic dog into a primordial beast. The changing setting in this novel greatly contributes to the transformation of Buck in to this "beast", for restful life in a beautiful sunny area is ripped and torn from him, so that he may serve a life in a ice filled, snowy and cold environment such as Alaska. On this journey, Buck discovers his true primitive instincts and learns who his true self is. The story is set in the late eighteen ninety's when men from around the world are traveling North for the rumored gold rush in the Yukon territory in Alaska. These men are seeking large and powerful dogs to pull their sleds of equipment and manpower to the North. Buck is stolen from h
So in conclusion we see that Buck's extensive journey, starting from the sunlit valley of Santa Clara to the freezing Yukon wilderness of Alaska, and his transformation as a ordinary domestic animal into a dominant primordial beast was initiated by the setting in this novel. With out the conditions of the Alaskan wilderness, the constant abuse from his masters and the howl from the forest, Buck would have died on the trail long ago, like many other domestic animals do, but instead he adapted to his changing settings and surroundings around him, and evolved into this dominant creature from which he can now live out his life under his true calling, that call being "The call of the wild." At this point in the novel, Buck had first started to see his transformation into a primordial beast, especially after killing Spitz. An exert from Chapter six says "Buck stood and looked upon his now dead enemy, and now he is the successful champion, the dominant primordial beast who had made his kill and found it good", and Buck continued on to work steadily as the true leader. Not much time passes when Francois and Perrault eventually sell the dog sled team to a new owner, a Scotch Half-Breed. This man later sells this team to three inexperienced travelers, Mercedes, Charles and Hal. These are a group of tenderfoot explorers who do not know a thing about sledding. As Buck and his team are forced to mush on, he encounters a man who saves him from the bitter cruelty of the incompetent masters
