Free and Not Free
Solomon was a free slave. He encountered the beauty of "freedom", which is described as having an economical and social life with total liberty. Even though free black people at that time (in the 19th century), really weren't able to follow a stable life of liberty and justice, they were still better off being pretentiously "free" than to be tormented every day, being slaves. Solomon understood the meaning being a slave because he experienced it in a way he would've never really thought of. But the true importance to his experience is that he had the opportunity to tell of how brutal one person can be to another, and how inhumane a person can be. Like Solomon, there were also many other people who have been driven to the misfortune of being kidnapped and held into the white man's business of slavery. Many of these kidnapped people were well acquainted with Solomon, whom these people told of their stories to. People like Clemens Ray, and Eliza contributed on telling their stories. Telling stories on "how their unfortunate race was subjected to the disadvantages", as Solomon described when he was speaking of his father. But, what is slavery? Many books and people best define slavery, by describing people who wor
Being free is having economical insurance. As mentioned in the book, Solomon Northup had many businesses in his lifetime. Solomon had many contracts, one of which was for the transportation of large rafts of timber, which he grew of a beneficiary experience from, and he also repaired the Champlain Canal. His labors brought him means of happiness and comfort. Working brought Solomon economical independence. Solomon could purchase a house with a farm to the likeness of his family and animals as well. This working gave Solomon the advantage of letting him do what he wanted, a farmer, a violin player, and to be in the business of navigation. Solomon was playing his own game of life. He had the opportunity of giving his family everything they needed. In my opinion there were two sides of Slavery, a good side and a bad side. The good side was what Solomon explained, when he described how William Ford treated his slaves, with sympathy and kindness, nevertheless he was a "slave owner." Solomon said he has only seen the bright side of slavery during his residence with Ford. The bad side of slavery was of course that you had to be treated like a dog or an animal. That you had to obey the commands of your master at all times or you'll receive whippings across your back. James Burch and Ebenezer Radburn portrayed this of side of evilness. These harsh actions are described: to be put aside with mules and horses, to be treated like animals and property, to aside these human beings from their emotions and feelings towards everything they ever loved, to humiliate and intimidate them in order to assure the dominant power. These people were made fun of and were considered to be inferior from masters. Free blacks lived their lives struggling across. Even though these people were supposedly free, they lived it intimidated and under pressure. The southern wh
