Temperamental Montresor

In ?The Cask of Amontillado? by Edgar Allan Poe, the setting is a crucial ingredient of the story describing a murder committed by Montresor. The setting is always shifting from one location to another and is not fully detailed; the reader completes the description with his imagination, scaring himself even more. The setting echoes Montresor?s state of mind. The murky ambiance reflects Montresor?s vengeful guise and the architecture symbolises his dark and devious mind.

First of all, the story?s setting is dark and sinister, which reinforces Montresor?s malevolent persona. Montresor masterminds a plan to get revenge at Fortunato: to bait, hook, reel him in, and finish him off. He uses the Amontillado wine, playing on Fortunato?s arrogance, to bait him. At this moment he needs to be deceitful. This treachery is clearly illustrated by the setting: ?It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season

In this part, Montresor entangles, hooks, Fortunato and intoxicates him even more. But it is also damp, which means that nitre is also found under the form of nitric acid. Nitric acid is as corrosive as Montresor?s mind is gradually destructive. At the end of the story, Montresor succeeds in killing Fortunato. The setting reveals his malevolence to the reader: ?It was now midnight?(232), he says. It is the total darkness: deep in the catacombs, his torch going out and thick air filled with nitre. This is the instant that reveals Montresor?s true evil; even he becomes sick of what he is doing. His mind is so dark, that even he does not know where he is. Montresor becomes crepuscular to bait Fortunato, corrosive to hook and reel him in, and divulges his darkness when he is finishing him off.

?It is farther on,? said I; ?but observe the white webwork which gleams from these cavern walls.?

In conclusion, after careful examination of the story, it appears that Edgar Allen Poe created Montresor and the setting of ?The Cask
