Abortion

Abortion is the deliberate killing of the weakest and most defenseless among us. Unfortunately, for the last few decades, the practice has been recognized as a fundamental human right by the highest court of the land. Many people are fervent supporters of abortion. Their reasons for support are varied. However, I believe that support for abortion is not possible for those who understand our dignity as human persons under God. We were made by God, and it is from Him that we derive our worth. The life of a child starts in the womb where God personally and sovereignly oversees the development and growth of the baby before birth. Only God has the right to give and take a life. Each life has value, no matter how young it may be.

In the United States, abortion laws began to appear in the 1820s, forbidding abortion after the fourth month of pregnancy. Through the efforts primarily of physicians, the American Medical Association, and legislators, most abortions in the United States had been outlawed by 1900. Illegal abortions were still frequent, though they became less frequent during the reign of the Comstock Law, which essentially banned birth control information and devices. By 1965, all fifty states banned abortion, with some exceptions that varied by state: to save the life of the mother, in cases of rape or incest, or if the fetus was deformed. Groups like the National Abortion Rights Action League and the Clergy Consultation Service on Abortion worked to liberalize anti-abortion laws.
