If I Knew
An experiment to determine if childhood socialization remains through high schoolCandidate's Number: 0648 009 Psychology HL Date of Submission: 22 December 2000 The researcher conducted an experiment to determine if teenagers still applied the gender roles they were taught as children to different professional jobs today. This experiment was conducted on a random sample of male and female high school students, ages 15 through 18, at a small rural high school in the western portion of the United States. This experiment was conducted during the lunch hour of the participants. Results from this experiment were directly in line with data found during research. Nearly all of the participating students drew the teacher and the nurse as females, while the lawyer and the policeperson were drawn as males. The researcher used long hair and/or a dress to signi
H1: Teenagers will still be under the impact of their socialization, and will be able to categorize professions by gender. Because the researcher used a random sample taken during the lunch hour, results were from a cross-sectional age group rather than a limited age range. However, due to the small sample size the experiment is not as strong as one that was performed on a larger sample size. Finally the researcher viewed the drawings of a policeperson, and in ten of the twelve drawings the policeperson was drawn as a male. Two of the participants elected to not participate in this portion of the study. The researcher was able to reject the null hypothesis because 100% of those who chose to participate in this drawing drew the policeperson as a male, which supported the research hypothesis. An experiment was designed to determine if teenage students still applied gender stereotypes to professional careers. The experiment was designed in a manner that allowed the researcher to stay completely impartial, as that is more ethical. The researcher hypothesizes there will be a positive correlation between the socialization from childhood still present and the gender a person draws different professionals. The purpose for this experiment was to test the researcher's hypothesis that teenagers are still socialized, from childhood, to assign professional jobs to each gender. The results of the experiment supported the researcher's hypothesis, which was backed by previous research.
