Discrimination
Discrimination is any condition in which a group or individual is treated differently based on something other than individual cause, usually their connection in a socially diverse group or category. Such categories may include ethnicity, sex, religion, age, or disability. Discrimination can be looked upon as positive or negative, depending on whether a person receives favors or opportunities, or is denied them. Today, though, discrimination is rarely positive. One of the most enveloping forms of discrimination in the United States is aimed at ethnic groups. It's a discriminatory form called Racism. Racism can be the mistreatment of a group of people on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, place of origin or even ancestry. The term racism may also mean a blind and unreasoning hatred, envy or prejudice. Some expressions of racism are slight, such as the unequal opportunity in housing and jobs. Some, not so subtle, are more devious, such as graffiti, intimidation or physical violence. Racial and ethnic slurs or so-called "jokes" are other examples of obvious racial discrimination. Unfortunately, they are often ignored because people do not know how to deal with them or even sadder yet, some don't care to know. Some
Around the world people of different race and/or ethnicity have been discriminated against. They have been refused service thousands of times, have been harassed and assaulted, and have been looked upon as a lower being. In some countries, cows are looked up to as a higher being, while the very people who perform back-breaking tasks, in order to keep their society and family afloat, are looked down upon. They are put into a category somewhere between an amoeba and a virus; spreading throughout the worldly populous, infecting it like a disease, only to leave it helpless, lifeless, and rotting away, until there's nothing left but a pile of used dust. For many people, like you and me, this is an everyday occurrence. Such a case would be when, in 1998, black farmers were ignored for a loan, because of their race. USDA loan officers were distributing financial aid to those who needed it. Unfortunately, those who needed it most, were the ones who never saw a cent and, unfortunately, lost everything they had worked so hard for, because someone had looked over them just because they were a different color. Another story, Harold Massop, was rejected for a business loan from three different banks despite his excellent track record. Banks in Denver have denied 51% of black business-loan applicants, while rejecting only 15% of white business-loans. What does that tell you? People today, are unfair, unjust, and cruel. We don't care about our fellow Americans as much as we care about our own selfish and greedy needs. Even today, as we deal with this tragedy that has come to pass this Tuesday last, we see racism throughout our country side. In cities all over the world, People of Islamic origin, Muslim faith, Indian descent, and even those who look like Indians, but aren't, have been yelled at, harassed, scrutinized, and even killed, despite the fact that they had nothing to do with the cowardly act of violence against our country. It got so bad, in-fact, that school children had to be evacuated from their school, for fear of their lives, because the commotion outside got too dangerous. Little do those who mistreat each of these innocent people know, the people they have abused, verbally and physically, are just like them, Americans hurting for their country, plain and simple. The Statue of Liberty has a saying: "The New Colossus Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, with conquering limbs astride from land to
