Midsummer's Nights Dream

The three marriages at the end of the play celebrate an ordered society. Discuss how order is born from disorder in 'A Midsummer's Nights Dream'.

--------------------------------------------------

"A Midsummer Nights Dream" is an unrealistic fantasy concerning lovers, fairies and royalty. It is a story rich with enchantment and magic. In the play we see how order is born from disorder in the fairy realm as in the mortal realm.

The play starts with Theseus, Egeus, Hermia, Lysander and Demetrius. Egeus is angry with his daughter (Hermia) because she has betrayed his wishes to marry Demetrius, she does not love Demetrius and is in love with Lysander. Egeus would like Theseus (the duke of Athens) to use his power so that his wishes are carried out. Theseus tells Hermia that she must marry Demetrius or else she will have to live her life as a nun, or be put to death.

"Whe'r, if you yield not to your father's choice,

You can endure the livery of a nun"

Theseus is a man who keeps law and order throughout Athens. His fiance Hippolyta who is the queen of the Amazons, was captured by Theseus to be his wife, it is ironic how a man of order abducted his wife, which is very disordered, but he still tells Hermia that she c

The childing autumn, angry winter....

Lysander falls madly in love with Helena because of the love flowers influence. Lysander is now in love with Helena and Hermia is now out of the picture, Lysander becomes nasty to Hermia and tells her that he could never be in love with such a being. Oberon sees Pucks mistake and tries to correct it, but more disorder comes from this. The love flower's juice is now dropped into Demetrius's eyes, so know he is in love with Helena. Helena of course thinks that this is some cruel joke, and Hermia is then mad because Helena has stole her lover.

In the forest, a group of Athenian workmen have gathered to rehearse a play to perform in front of Theseus and Hippolyta. A play is a big sign of order in a community. One of the first signs of order from early civilisation was the ability to tell a story through acting.

Puck, one of Oberons mischievous fairies decides that he shall put an asses head on Bottom, one of the Athenian workmen, this will be the ogre that Titania will fall in love with. Bottom scares off all of his fellow workmen because he has an ass's head. Puck enjoys toying in mortal's lives, this is because the fairies get board with their tedious lives, and so they look for some amusement in the mortals. Nicoll Allardyce, a literary critic found in Between Fantasy and Reality writes,

"I'll follow you, I'll lead you about around,

Puck has fulfilled his job, but he has also amused himself in his disorderly ways.
