The Mona Lisa is a small painting about two feet in height and one foot in width. It is in the Vatican in Rome, or perhaps in the Louvre in Paris. It was painted during the Renaissance by Leonardo DaVinci, an inventor, scientist, architect, and artist. It is not known of whom the painting is of, or why it was made. The woman in the painting exhibits some striking facial features. Is she smiling or not? What is that sneaky little frown that she has on her lips? What did Mona and Leonardo do before working on this painting? She is wearing a green dress and has very dark straight hair. In the background there are trees and far away buildings and on top of it all is the sky. It is the most recognized painting in the world.The Mona Lisa has been re-interpreted a million times. There have been so many ads featuring her, so many spoofs of Mona Lisa with a mustache, with bleached hair, or bearing her breasts. Why has this picture become so popular? With every re-interpretation or spoof its popularity grows. Maybe it is the fame of the artist that helps it along. I wonder how a painting of this sort would be displayed? Definitely not in a white cube; the painting brings to mind comfort and relaxation. This would totally contrast with a sterile setting of a white cube. I think this painting should be shown in a older style space; kind of like the one at Williams college with all those baroque paintings. All though I don't know what other paintings would fit in with it. I would really like it if this painting was put into a room full of sculptures. This is because the Mona Lisa is very much like a sculpture. The painting is so still and calm - she just sits there like a passive observer. Yet looking into her eyes I kind of get the feeling that she knows what I'm thinking and smiling coyly about it. I think this would be a great contrast to the blank stares of sculptures. Paintings in the art world function very similarly to currency in our economic system. The more a painting circulates the more value it gains. The Mona Lisa has been circulating our world for hundreds of years. Not only is this painting very old, but multiple versions of it have been around since it was first painted. Many consider this painting to be da Vinci's most famous work. It is such a subtly crafted piece of classical beauty that people of all walks of life admire it. The Mona Lisa is a staple of our culture and it will stay in our collective consciousness for centuries to come. As more time goes by we will see which icons of the past remain with us, and which ones will drift away into the oblivion of the deep past.
