A general theme of disorder is present throughout the poem. One definition of disorder is "to depose from holy orders", which relates back to the time period in which the piece was written. It was a time in which people were pushing the limits of religion and sexuality, while still trying to find a somewhat universal boundary. The title, "Delight in Disorder," alludes to taking pleasure in a sinful lust. The woman that is the inspiration of this poem, perhaps a harlot, is the embodiment of all that is immorally enticing and desirable.

The poem tells us that the woman "kindles in clothes a wantonness"(2), or rather, stirs up and arouses a wild an immoral presence.

The woman's entire outfit is described in such a way that builds on the disorder theme. Herrick first starts with her lawn. A lawn is a scarf made of light cotton or linen fabrics with a very fine weave that is probably see-through. He notes how this becomes a "fine distraction" (4). Herrick then goes on to describe her lace as having "an erring lace, which here and there/enthralls the crimson stomacher" (6). When looked up, most would note the general definition of erring as being an error or mistake, yet it also has another more interesting and most fitting definition. Erring can also mean to violate accepted morals; to sin. By saying that this woman has an erring lace has a double meaning. The first is keeping with the theme of disorder, and is painting the picture of how there is much disarray to this woman
