Epilepsy
Robert J. Gumnit, a M.D., writes in his book Living Well With Epilepsy that all people suffering from seizures feel like that they are outcasts of society. They feel different than other people. They are scared to interact with others in public for fear of having a seizure and being made fun of. Some of the greatest people had seizures, such as Socrates, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Thomas Edison. People should not have to deal with this insulting everyday or even at all if possible. If people were more educated about epilepsy then they would not taunt epileptics, much less care that they even have seizures. To bystanders, convulsions look to be life threatening. The first time a person sees another have a grand mal seizure, which consists of lost of consciousness and convulsive movements of the body, they more than likely think that the person is dying. Seizures are highly misunderstood and highly mistaken for something to be feared. People with epilepsy are normaly human beings with personalities just as great and wonderful as anyone else's. There are hundreds of causes of seizures from getting hit on the head to meningitis. Epilepsy is not a thing to be feared and if you are humane at all, it is not a thing to be taken advantage of either. The Scriptures seem to imply that a person with seizures may be possessed, that God is punishing us for past sins of our family members. Almost none of today's theologians would hold this point of view. In the past, people with seizures were regarded as possessed. Because the causes and treatments of seizures were unknown, family members often felt that God was punishing them. It seemed easy to attach seizures to theological significance, especially since people relate verses of the Holy Bible to epilepsy.
