Technology in Education
One of the most important tools in the profession of education has always been technology. Technology allows the student to comprehend the subject matter at hand easier. Not only is technology beneficiary to the student, but it is also a great help to the teacher. Using certain tools can make a class more interested, and knowing that the teacher has their attention can make their job easier as well. I will be concentrating on the tools and equipment that have been used in education to benefit the student as well as the teacher. I will also be discussing the negative side effects technology has on education. There are many different types of technology that have been used in education. Some of the shapes of technology seem so simple, while other forms are so complex. In the past technology has given education an edge with its contributions. Though there are many, here are some that have had the greatest impact on education. One of the earliest forms of technology in education is a slate. A slate was a portable blackboard for teachers and students. It was advertised in the United States as early as 1737. They were widely used in the United States in rural areas where paper was scarce and expensive. The size of a normal slate
Since technology is so advanced some tend to use it for the wrong reasons in education, the most common being the Internet. Since the popular use of the Internet teachers have said that plagiarism is at an all time high. Students even have realized that some of their teacher's notes and assignments come from the Internet. Nowadays it is much easier to buy a term paper via Internet. There are tens of thousands of sites that are dedicated to selling term papers, book reports and everything else the common student would need. The Internet is a unique tool and it is a shame that these people use it for these negative things. In the 1800's education had its first encounter with motion pictures. The device was called a magic lantern, which showed a series of slides. However, the subjects of the slides were not usually as entertaining. The material one could find would be various plants, animals, and trees. The magic lantern allowed the class to have a visual of what they were learning in front of them. The future of technology in education has no limits. What we believe is amazing today will be obsolete in ten years. I also see the use of the Internet becoming even more common. The Internet will be used 75% of the class. I see the teacher giving assignments that involve the use of the Internet for every subject. Lesson plans and syllabuses for a class will all be available on the web. Teachers will collaborate with other teachers all over the world to teach their classes together on the net. The next great technological advancement education received was in 1910, the 35mm camera. Using the camera students could see pictures from all over the world. So instead of describing what the Statue of Liberty looks like on Ellis Island to a class in Kansas, now the class including the teacher could see with their own eyes what exactly it looks like. Bringing once again a visual perspective to education. Technology in education today is rapidly approaching its peak. There are more ways today to help educate students as well as help teachers. I find the technology that is used today fascinating and unbelievable. There are so many gizmos and gadgets out there to make learning fun, educational, and easy.
