Islam And Buddism

Religion is the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God. There are many recognized religions in the world, which all teach its followers to live life the right way, but the meaning differs according to the religion itself. They have some beliefs and practices that are totally similar and distinct from one another. Some examples are the differences and similarities of Buddhism and Islam from many different aspects.

Buddhism came from India, and was headed by Prince Siddharta Gautama, who later became known as Buddha or the enlightened one. Born has a prince living in a caste, he later abandoned his comfortable life to find place of nirvana (paradise). In order to do that, he joined a band of ascetic, who was a group of Hindu priests. In his teaching, the Buddha taught his followers to follow the middle way. He accomplished enough understanding of the nature of being by meditation. After his success, he decided to reveal his knowledge to everyone that will follow him.

Islam initiated in Mecca, where Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) was born. People believed that he was the last nabi (messenger) that Allah has given to the world. The religion was not honored in its city of origin th

The purpose of women in Buddhism and Islam is also very distinct. Buddha is known to refuse his stepmother into the Order, and he was reported to say that the admittance of them would only shorten the life of Buddhist religion. The Koran, however, stated that men and women are equal in the eyes of Allah, although in practice it is not necessarily so. Like in Afghanistan, women have to be submissive to the husband. Many of the women have to hide under the veil. The woman must always obey to follow strict rules enforce by the Taliban or else they were shut and killed.

Another similar but yet different aspect of Buddhism and Islam is the way these two religions have deprivation towards some of the food they consume. However, the reason why they are so different. Some Buddhists became vegetarian in an attempt to strictly live up to the Eightfold path, one of it says, "to kill no living things". Muslim on the other hand, can only eat food that is considered halal (holy). Food that is considered not halal includes pork, and many other animals that are not slaughtered the specific way. Fasting from dawn to dusk for a Muslims is a crucial during the month of Ramadan. For Buddhists, fasting is advised as meditation, for the goal is to purify the body and mind.

In addition, Buddhism places importance on the Four Noble Truths, which is the teaching of Buddha, a guide to enlightenment. These are a set of guidance that basically teaches the followers of Buddha the essential quality of life. Life is basically suffering if it is lived ordinarily, and that the cause of suffering is desire. It discloses the way to heal the desires. The Fourth Noble Truth strictly talks about how it can be accomplished through the Eightfold path.
