A seperate Peace

?My war ended before I ever put on a uniform; I was on active duty all my time at school; I killed my enemy there.? This quote by Gene Forrester, a character in John Knowle?s novel A Separate Peace, depicts Gene?s personal turmoil during his high school years. Throughout the entire novel Gene had an emotional quest for his own separate peace. He endured test after test of his inner strength while attending the Devon Academy. Gene Forrester had many serious occurrences during his high school years, some of which have scarred him for life.

Gene attended the Devon Academy in New England during the start of World War II. However, Gene had his own war and enemies to fight, not the enemy Nazis. Gene?s greatest competitor and enemy ended up as his best friend Phineas. Gene had not even enlisted or ??put on [his] uniform?? for the world war yet, and al


In closing, Gene Forrester had dealt with many occurrences and trials while attending the Devon Academy, some of which have left lasting impressions. Gene had to deal with the loss of his friend and re-live the denial and betrayal buried deep inside of him. Based upon the story and factual events, it is clear that Gene was more of a weaker person than strong. Between his low self pity, and constant enviness against Phineas, he was automatically bound to be a low self esteemed person. Which is seeing him as a weaker person. Upon acknowledging his own guilt, Gene could ride himself of the black empty hole inside of him, and truly find his own separate peace.
