In the first fifteen chapters of Their Eyes Were Watching God, one of the most important events that effected Janie internally and externally was the time between the death of her second husband Joe to her move to the Everglades with Tea Cake. Her outlook on life, her independence, and her views of love changed drastically during this time in her life. Janie began to live again after the death of her husband Joe and her marriage with Tea Cake. Tea Cake wanted her to be who she really was and not be one of the “do not speak unless you are spoken to” women. Tea Cake took Janie with him when he went hunting, fishing, the movies, or a dance and that was something that she had never done with Joe. “It was so crazy digging worms by lamp light and setting out for Lake Sabelia after midnight that she felt like a child breaking rules.
