One of the more interesting design choices that I noticed early on was the lack of sufficient masking. The black curtains hanging on each end of the stage barely hid the double doors to the well-lit stairwell from the audience's vision. Another aspect of the scenic design that reinforced this idea was the use of scenic elements away from the stage. The red banners and large columns placed around the theatre walls extended that music hall feeling from the proscenium out into the audience. In fact, the mere placement of the tables, as opposed to bleacher seating, was a very strong design choice. The two chandeliers hanging down over the audience also contributed to this area. By hanging them from the grid, audience members were compelled to examine them. When doing this, it's unavoidable to notice the grid, which is another reminder to the audience that they are watching a theatrical production. This helped greatly to achieve the director's conceptual interpretation visually, as well as with the whole experience.
