Secret Submission of Women

A detailed Summary of Secret Submission of Women

My group's final project was the Oppression of Muslim Women. This topic did not start out as holding a special place in my heart or as something that meant a lot to me. To tell the truth, the topic to me just sounded like a good cause that our group could find a lot of information about. So I agreed to the topic. However, through the progress of my research and personal reflection I learned that the Oppression of Muslim women thousands of miles across the ocean did affect me personally because I too am a woman, an oppressed woman that does not even realize it.

Afghanistan is a poor, struggling and slowly developing country. People there try to make ends meet and survive to the best of their ability. In rural areas people do not care about rights, especially those of women, because they instead are too worried about not being able to feed their children. In the large cities, such as Kabul, awareness of the oppression of women is increased, but the forces behind eliminating the oppression of women is limited. The Taliban took over power and sought to make women not just obedient, but nonexistent and it succeeded.

For the past five years, women were viewed as not just as submissive but were made to be invisible. Taliban Rules wer

After reading much about this oppression in magazines and on the internet I thought to myself, "Yeah, this type of treatment sucks, but what do I care it isn't affecting me. It could never affect me because I live in the United States where things like this do not happen." Or do they? Are women in the United States made to be submissive? Are we in the same position as the Muslim women of Afghanistan are in? All these questions raced through my head after hearing most of the presentations in class by the other groups. I could not help thinking that there really wasn't a big difference between the women living in Afghanistan and those living in the United States.

Appearance also applies to makeup. It is seen that women wear makeup to make themselves pretty. And who is it that they make themselves pretty for? Who do they spend hours of changing for? No they are not doing this for themselves they are doing this for men, for acceptance by men. Me are such ignorant creatures that do most of their decision making on looks, especially when it comes to women. Through this women do not try to present themselves to others as they are, but instead present themselves in disguise with makeup and the socially accepted clothes. Women do not want to stand out and proclaim their individuality, as they should. They want to conform because if they stand out then they become gossip. They are seen as sluttish and as not respecting themselves. The way a woman dresses does not say that she does not respect herself, if anything, I think the way a woman dresses relays how comfortable she is with herself and her body. Therefore, if you have a perfect stomach or rolls galore a shirt exposing that should only say one thing: " I feel comfortable with my body and I want to show that to everyone. And if you don' t like that then that is just your tough luck". All women should have this mentality. They should proclaim who they are not who they want everyone to think they are. Women should not conform to society and laws of submission. Women are people with feelings that deserve to live like everyone else out there, free from what others think or expect of them. They should live up to what each one expects from herself. Women should dress and put on makeup for themselves in o
