1930's
The '30s was a rough decade for America. The stock market had just crashed and the country was in depression. War was breaking out in Europe, a New Deal was being made, and scandals were everywhere. The thirties brought the country many hardships, but it also brought it together due to the fact that we had to work together to pull through the hard times. There were two presidents in the thirties. The first was Herbert Hoover, whom served from 1929-1933. During the first year of his term, the stock market crashed and the country fell into depression. He was called the do-nothing president by some because his efforts to help the economy didn't do much. On March 4, 1933; Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated into office with a promise of bringing the country out of depression. FDR took immediate action to help the country. He started the New Deal to boost the economy. His efforts helped the economy to grow once again until 1937 when the country fell into another depression that lasted for another year. However, he was respected for his efforts to help the country. Some new laws were passed and some were changed during this decade. The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act was passed in June of 1930.
The government presented many solutions to these problems. The New Deal hired people to work by working on government projects like railroads, roads, the Hoover Dam, and beautification projects. The Hoover Dam was built on the Colorado River to provide hydroelectric power to parts of California and Nevada, like Las Vegas. It was a great triumph in design and technology. Another thing the government did was to do nothing and let the country get out of the depression by itself, because the economy is in a constant cycle of rise and fall. And if it was left it alone it would eventually rise again. As far as entertainment in the thirties, movies became popular especially horror movies and screwball comedies. Movies like Dracula, Dr. Jekyle and Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Snow White, King Kong, and The Wizard of Oz were released in the 1930's. Comics became a big part of the thirties. Comics like Popeye, Superman, and Buck Rogers came on the scene in the thirties. America's youth was obsessed with Buck Rogers and Superman. This was also a time of cops and robbers. Two well-known criminals executed a great crime spree during the thirties. Bonnie and Clyde were two of the most well known and ruthless criminals of the time. They went on a crime spree that spanned several states. They robbed banks and stores as well as murdering a number of people including some cops. Their spree ended when they were killed in a shoot out with the police. The group of police who hunted them down were known as the "untouchables", and gained fame after this case. The Smoot-Hawkey Tariff, which raised tariffs, caused prices of imported goods higher. This move put the country into further depression, and it was ill advised. The Federal Reserve, which was made to prevent depressions and panics, tried to help the country but just made things worst. It made two bad mistakes. First, the Fed increased the amount of money in the country by 60%. This caused the stock market to boom and then crash. Another mistake they made was raising interest rates, which hurt the economy even more. This caused inflation and money was almost worthless. Jazz music was
