R&B
There are many types of music in the world but the one that stands out in everyone's mind is the sound of Rhythm and Blues. It has been around for many decades. It has captured people's interest around the world. Rhythm and Blues(R&B), or as it was called before "black music", started in the early 1940's by slaves in the south. This phenomenon brought about new music, fashion, and dance styles. The white people thought of R&B as black music during the 1940's and early 50's. It has the single greatest influence on music worldwide for most of the 20th century. Its influence can be traced in forms of rock music, country, gospel, jazz even Nigerian Juju -a style of dance music. Rhythm and Blues was started in the South, but later on moved to Midwest, Northeast, and West Coast cities due to the shift in American demographics, after World War II. One of two significant developments, which occurred that had an effect on R&B was the invention of the Magnetic Tape, the other was the formation of broadcasting companies. (Schneider 40) The invention of the magnetic tape was a tremendous help to those who wanted to start their own independent record companies. Sinc
In 1929 he married his teenage sweetheart Estelle Oldham. He built a little house in Oxford Mississippi, where he and his wife lived. Some of his famous novels are Sound And The Fury, As I Lay Dyeing, White Rose of Memphis and of course the famous story of Hamlet. Three of his stories were turned in to movies, one was The Big Sleep, and the other was To Have and Have Not and Hamlet. In 1949 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, and in 1954 he received the Pulitzer Prize. Unfortunately he died at the age of 65 on July 6, 1962. (World Book) There are several characteristics that people use to distinguish R&B from all the other music. One major characteristic is the "Timber". "Timber" is a skill that most of us have. You may think that you do not have it but you do. When you listen to music, if you can specify a saxophone from a guitar, you are using timber to come up with that differentiation. Now, of course there are other ways to differentiate R&B from other music, such as 1) the twelve-bar form, a three-lyrics line structure originating in the earlier styles of blues. 2) Call and respond, that is when a singer or a musician sings a phrase and another musician or singer responds with another phrase. (Encarta) Before radio stations started playing R&B music, it was heard in the small urban cities by performers who would do something called "One Niter." Where they would drive in to the heart of the black community, start performing, end around 1:00 Am pack their stuff and leave around 1:30 Am so they could drive to the next city or state. Most of these performers like, Otis Redding were happy if they could find any place to perform. They would perform in barns, auditoriums, dance halls, warehouses; sometimes made their own stages. Otis Redding grew up in Macon, Georgia where he sang in Church. (World Book)
