He successfully kept European colonists from their soil. He also kept the kingdom independent. During world war two Thailand allied with Japan, and Japan occupied Thailand during World War 2. After the war however, Thailand allied with the United States, and became an important base for U.S. activities in the 1960's and 1970's. King Rama the ninth has ruled Thailand since 1946. As of May 2000, he surpassed king Rama the first as the nation's longest living ruler. Thailand's military and government have recently had some problems. In 1991 they had some major terrorist violence and drug trafficking. In 1997 they had a severe financial crisis. In year 2000 they revived the economy and decreased corruption
The National Anthem of Thailand is entitled " make love not war." The major religion in Thailand is Theravada Buddhist. About 95% of Thailand's population is Theravada Buddhist. Muslims making up 4%, and other religions make up the rest. Buddhism deeply affects people's daily lives. Buddhist wats (or temples) dominates the Thai community. It is expected that all young men are to become Buddhist monks for at least three months to study Buddhist principles. A typical day in Thailand is not much different than an American day. Schools and Companies open around eight. People are at their jobs until around five. Thai eat their dinner around seven in the evening. This is the main meal in a Thai community. Other than their regular visit to the Buddhist temple, Thai villages are no different than our daily lives.
