Mytholgy in the Lion King
"But Simba, you are the rightful ruler of Pride Rock!" yells Nala, Simba's long lost friend. "Well maybe I don't want to be king!" Simba says. After watching the movie, The Lion King, I realized that mythology was definitely a part of the movie. It relates a lot in many different ways. As I watched it, I took out the key elements of mythology in the movie. I'm here to argue the point and tell you the reasons that The Lion King is a mythological story. First of all, one key element in the movie that I found was ruling a certain kingdom of town. In The Lion King, King Mufasa is the ruler of Pride Rock, which is the land where the light touches. Although all the animals follow his command, it doesn't mean he has a dictatorship over Pride Rock. King Mufasa consults the animals to find out what is the best result. On the other hand, In the book, The Odyssey, Odysseus is the ruler of his city, which is the island of Ithaca. When you think of a hero, what do you see? Do you see a tough, brave man doing anything to please you? If you were dying, do you think this "hero" would save you? When I think of hero in the movie, Simba right away comes to my mind. He took many risks a hero would do. For examp
Have you ever said to your parents... "I'm going to run away?" In the movie, Simba runs away from his gorgeous home. He left home because first of all, Scar tells him to and second, he is only a baby to realize what is right from wrong. He was so upset that on the fact that Scar told him that he killed his father that he didn't know what to do. Once Simba grew up, Nala, Simba's childhood friend, came back into his life telling him to go back home. In his heart, he really does want to come home and be with his family again. In the book, The Odyssey, Odysseus is also away from home. He also wants to come back but the one thing that is stopping him is the way home. He has no clue on how to get home. See any resemblance there? Lastly, the final element I found in the movie was Good vs. Evil. Simba and King Mufasa were always fighting against Scar. Scar was the biggest enemy in the movie and Simba wants to get back at Scar for killing his father. In The Odyssey, there was a conflict of Odysseus vs. Poseidon. Even though there were more enemies, Poseidon was the main enemy. To compare, as I said before on how Simba wanting to get back at Scar, the same happens to Poseidon. The God of Sea wants to get back at Odysseus for killing Cyclops. Two Kings fighting over their enemy...anything similar about that? After I looked up all this information and connected it with the mythology stories, I searched for more connections on the internet related to The Lion King. I found a similar story. Let me explain it. It shows that the movie borrows heavily from the Oedipus myth. Although Simba does not kill his father, but his Uncle Scar does instead, it is still a murder in the family that kills Mufasa. When Simba runs away, Scar takes control over Pride rock. This could be seen as a curse on the land it exactly the same way as the curse of Oedipus family's curse. Scar is so arrogant he does not care and will not accept that it is his fault ever
