Diving

Acquiring the art of a sport is never an easy task. Skills that are needed to develop a person's ability and strength are specific to that certain sport, and as some would say, are more easily said then done. Diving among many other sports falls into this particular category. Although it may not be one of the most popular sports, it is very difficult to acquire the certain skills, even for the most basic dive.

When learning diving keep in mind the skills a gymnast would use on the vault aspect of gymnastics. The gymnast first gets a running start, does a hurdle right before they hit the springboard, to propel themselves onto the horse or vault and then performs a certain skill. Diving uses much of this same concept, only the approach is much slower, and controlled. Also there is no horse. However, divers use the same head start, and hurdle to propel themselves into the air.

The first step in assimilating diving as a whole and the most important step is the approach off of the board. This, almost like a cell in the body, is the most basic and fundamental building block for all the more complicated th

ings to come. Like gymnastics, for the approach one much first begin on the ground. Practicing on a straight line, one must take four natural steps like you are walking down the street. If one is right-handed they need to start with their right foot. Similarly, if one is left- handed they need to begin with their left foot.

However, the process only begins here. After one has become accustomed to, and feel comfortable enough practicing their steps on a straight line, they need to add the all-important hurdle. The hurdle begins when the last foot of one's fourth step hits the ground. When landing with that last foot, one should do so with more force than they would with the three previous steps. Practice this until it feels comfortable. Utilizing this, one then need to learn the jumping part of the hurdle. As one's fourth step hits the ground, they need to swing the opposite leg, in a bent 90-degree angle up to about hip level, in one single jumping motion. When one lands they should do so with their two feet parallel to each other.

Moving along, one needs to then take the next step and practice the same
