Montag Book of Ecclesiastes

In the end of the novel, Montag becomes chased by the Hound. Montag escapes from the Hound by reaching the river. He becomes washed ashore in the countryside where he follows a railroad track to a group of men. The men give him a fluid which seems to change his scent. They also tell him that the search has continued in the other direction. They later turn on the television to watch a scapegoat get killed. Montag then learns that the men seem to be former professors and intellectuals. They also say they make up a network of thousands of people who memorize books. They tell Montag he appears important because he seems like a "back-up copy" of the Book of Ecclesiastes. He feels his reading has finally become validated. As they leave, Montag mentions that he does not miss his wife or would not care if she would die. Later jets bomb the city. Montag repeats the Book of Ecclesiastes to himself as he thinks about Mildred. After the aftershock dies down, Granger compares mankind to a phoenix rising again and again from its own ashes, and says that they will first need to look at themselves. The men then turn toward the city to help the survivors.

After watching the scapegoat's death on the television, Granger turns to Montag and says, "Welcome back to life." Granger then introduces Montag to the other men, who all seem like former professors and intellectuals. Granger tells him they appear like a part of a network of thousands of people all over the country who have parts of different books memorized. Granger says that Montag seems important because he represents their "back-up copy" of the Book of Ecclesiastes. Montag's reading finally becomes validated by someone. Granger explains that his group is waiting for humanity to become ready for books again. He accepts the possibility of another Dark Age, but he seems confident about man's determination to save what seems worth saving. Montag tells them that he left his wife back in the city and worries that something must seem wrong with him, because he does not miss her and would not be sad if she became killed. Granger tells him a story and says that he believes that when people change even a small part of the world deliberately and thoughtfully, they leave enough of their souls behind to enable other people to properly mourn them. Suddenly, they see jets flash over the city and drop bombs. The city seems vaporized by the explosion. The men become knocked flat by the shock wave. Montag then pictures Mildred just as she's about to meet her death. Suddenly he remembers that he met her in Chicago
