Of Mice and Men
In the novel, "Of Mice and Men" dreams are a very important, recurring motif in thetext. For example, George and Lennie both want to own a ranch together when they get the money. Lennie especially want's to have a ranch filled with bunnies, Curly's wife wants to be famous and be well known and Crooks in how all he want's is equality because he is black. In this essay it will be described and shown how these dreams that these people have, have been important to each specific character. George and Lennie want to own a wonderful ranch together when they get the money they need. Lennie is somewhat mentally challenged. He likes mice, and bunnies mostly. He is very big, strong, hard working and does what he is told, therefore he would be able to handle the crops and all the "heavy lifting" that had to be done all day. George was small and in charge. Lennie listened to him and looked up to George like a father. George and Lennie want a room too their selves, describes Candy and she say's, "We gonna have dogs an' rabbits an' chickens. We're gonna have green corn an' maybe a cow or a goat." It's good for Lennie to stride for a dream like this because if he didn't want to do anything and he just let his metal illnes
Crooks has a dream of how he should be treated equally just like the others. Crooks is a black Negro who slept in the barn. Crooks wanted to have the same rights that all of the other ranch hands have. He wants to play cards with them in the bunkhouse but because he is black he can't play cards in there. They also said he stinks and they're very raciest against him. Crooks is also not treated with respect, they don't call him by his name, they call him "stable buck." Crooks sleeps in the barn alone every night because he is black, not with all the other guys like everyone else in the ranch he is by himself and for what? Nothing, absolutely nothing he really gets jerked around. Crooks gets placed in a really difficult atmosphere. Everyone hates him because he is black. If they gave him a chance to let him come into the bunkhouse and be a part of "the guys" like the rest of them and not make him feel like he has to sleep out in the barn knowing that they all hate him then they would actually see that he is a really good guy and they shouldn't be that prejudice and stereotypical of him. Crooks should just keep on thinking that he should be just as equal as any of them. Crooks might even be a better worker or thinker then one of the white men but they still treat him like a horse in the barn that's dirty and smells. This dream is extremely important to keep for Crooks because if he doesn't even care about people bad mouthing him, his race or his nature then he is just going to go into a depression. Crooks needs to hold his head up high and not let those guys get to him and keep that dream of having his equality. In summery as you can see from all of the dreams listed in George and Lennie's dream to own a ranch together full of animals, Curly's wife for becoming a movie star and wanting to be something and Crooks for just wanting to be excepted by others and how he wants his equality in life. These are very important dreams that have been described and shown in the essay and play a significant role in the novel "O
