Wright Brothers
Wilbur and Orville Wright's contributions to aviation were among the most important in our century. The invention of flight was first thought of hundreds of years ago, but look how long it took us. From 1903, when the Wrights flew an eight horsepowered plane until now when we fly a thirty ton plane that has thousands of horsepower, we have made incredible advances in the technology of aviation. The effects of the invention of the plane are beyond counting. The Wright Brothers made a difference in the world today from business, to mail, to vacations. Our lives today would not be the same without the Wright Brothers. Wilbur Wright was born in Millville, Indiana in April 16, 1867. His brother Orville was born four years later in Dayton, Ohio in August 19, 1821. They had two older brothers, Reuchlin and Lorin, and a younger sister named Katherine. Their parents were Bishop Milton Wright and Susan Koerner Wright. Their father was a minister of the United Brethren Church. Their mother was a housewife and was extremely good with her hands, which was obviously passed down to both Wilbur and Orville. Susan Wright died in 1889 of tuberculosis; Wilbur was 22, Orville 18. She, unfortunately, did not live lo
In 1909, Wilbur took aloft Lt. Frank Lahm. After the flight, a contr˙˙t was signed by the Wrights to build a plane for the new air corps. In many wars the plane made the difference of the world. We might not have won World War II without the power of the plane. Since we were the first inventors of the plane, our nation is far more advanced in aviation technology than other countries. Our business travel would be completely different if we did not have the airplane. Many executives fly to Japan, for instance, to do business. However, before the plane it would take at least a month to even get there. The mail we send overnight is all flown by plane. If we did not use planes for mail it would tnte days and even weeks before receiving mail. The way our food is made is all dependent on shipping by Airplane. Meat, for inst ce, used to have to be salted and preserved before it was sold so it would not grow old. But now we buy the meat fresh and unto hed with preservatives, thanks to the airplane. Airplanes are used in every which way, they are used for putting out forest fires, for radar, different sea rescues and much more. We take for granted so much what Wilbur and Orville Wright did for us in 1903. We rarely ever think about it. But I bet that over 80% of all Americans have been in an airplane and most of them don't eve stop to think how the Wrights struggled to get in the air in 1902, in Kitty Hawk. Wilbur Wright was born in Millville, Indiana in April 16, 1867. H˙˙ brother Orville was born four years later in Dayton, Ohio in August 19, 1821. Susan Wright died in 1889 of tuberculosis; Wilbur was 22, Orville 18. She, unfortunately, did ot live long enough to see her sons' great success. Bishop Wright, on the other hand, did. He died of old age at age 88 and beadre he died he was flown in the air by both Wilbur and Orville. whn 1890, a bicycle craze swept the nation, and the Wrights both purchased bikes for themselves. After fixing their own bikes, fliends started bringing in their bikes. The brothers gained a reputation as skilled mechanics. In 1892, they formed the "Wrights ycle Company," and opened a shop. A few months later, they opened four more shops. At first, they rented, sold, and repaired bicycles, but they soon built their own custom bikes, the "St. Clair," and the less expensive "Van Cleve." They also built a onemoylinder combustion engine to power the tools in their shop. The first motorized flight was flown by Wilbur Wright. To have a straight takeoff, they built a monorail that was 60 feet long, which had four parts that were 15 feet each. The first attempt, Wilbur pulled up too harbyat the end of the rail, the engine stalled, and he crashed. The next flight, two days later, was flown by Orville. He flew for b2 seconds and was the first pilot to power a flight of mankind! To achieve the first real flight, Orville had to take off and ld d from the same altitude, where others had started from a cliff or hill and landed at a lower altitude from their starting pointle One of the less successful aviation stories was of Samuel Langley. He was well-known for his experiments with model airplanes. He had built a successful plane that was launched from a houseboat and landed on shore. Then the army offered to pay for a new ane that he would build for them. The plane that the army asked for was larger and more powerful. This second plane was an exact copy of the first plane, just bigger. On test day for the new plane, it was launched from a houseboat and fell like a stone to the freezing river. All the media was there and every ne
