Stem Cell Research

August 9th was a big day for our country and what the future will hold for stem cell research. "The U.S. conducts more than 90% of the world's biomedical research, with this decision to not fund all stem cell research we will most likely fall behind the world in this type of research." (Arnst 88) This issue is the first of many that will arise about what this country thinks is moral and right. Stem cell research is an extremely controversial issue that most of us have either a strong position for or against. We have all heard different facts as to what will happen in the future with science and if this is the first step into gene engineering. I will talk about the facts, give you some history of what stem cell research is, tell you what President George W. Bush's decision means to this country, what the future holds for stem cell research, and my thoughts about what stem cell research could possible lead to.

First off here are what stem cells are and how they are made and retrieved. Stem cells are the first cells created in an embryo just days after the joining of an egg and sperm. What is unique about stem cells is they are blank slates that can be transformed into hundreds of tissue types. Most of

The future of stem cell research looks promising, but controversial. Now that scientists won't be able to get the funding they wanted from the national government they will most likely have to move to adult or umbilical stem cell research in order to get funding; they will not get as big of a protest, if at all. Stem cell research can go in two ways, it can either be promising and can cure a wide range of diseases and illnesses or it may not be able to do anything. Scientists don't know enough about it to really make a good assumption. They think it might be the key to curing illness and disease, but they aren't even to the stage to test it on humans. Some say that stem cell research has been blown way out of proportion and offered many hopes that it will most likely not be able to fill. Others that have these life threatening diseases are very hopeful that stem cell research will be a life saving treatment.

our cells, after a few weeks old, have a plan of what they are to do; they can form our organs, bone, skin, brain, and all of the other properties that each human has to function. These stem cells don't have a function or a plan, yet. After the sperm fertilizes an egg, the resulting embryo begins dividing into genetically identical cells. After several days, the fertilized egg has grown into a ball of uniform cells. By four days, the cells have formed a blastocyst, which is a mass of stem cells surrounded by an outer ring that eventually develops into the placenta. Scientists would then extract the stem cells and grow them further in the lab. The stem cells could be turned into specialized cells before being transplanted in the body. If the blastocyst was allowed to develop, the "characterless cells take on different identities when specific genes are switched on or off. Stem cells destined for the pancreas active insulin-producing genes, while budding liver cells turn on bile-producing ones". (Begley et al. 25) These stem cells eventually turn into the 210 specialized tissues types that form a complete human body.

On the evening of August 9th 2001, President George W. Bush made his soul searching decision, he would allow federal money to support the already 64 stem cells lines, cells that behave in reproductive ways and can be grown time and again in a test tube without too many surprises, that are already discovered. He will also set up a bioethics committee that will oversee the companies that will use federal money. This does not mean that private companies cannot try to extract other stem cell lines, they just can't use federal money to do this. The people seem content with this decision, it doesn't completely shut stem cell research down and it doesn't completely open it up either. It lets stem cell research go where it will go and then be reviewed again at a later time when that president will have to decide if stem cells are curing di
