The protagonist of No Exit is Joseph Garcin. He is the first character to arrive in hell and he is shocked by his surroundings. Because "Second Empire furniture" is the only adornment in the room, Garcin questions the ordinary appearance of this hell and he wants to know where "the instruments of torture" are. Clearly Sartre's hell is not what Garcin has expected. Garcin discusses with the valet the absence of common amenities such as: a toothbrush, a mirror, and a bed. When Garcin finds out he must live in eternal daylight, he is both concerned and upset knowing darkness will never come. As the first character introduced Garcin gets the action started in the play.
Inez is the second character to arrive in hell. She is the antagonist of the story. When Garcin suggests that they "make a point of being extremely courteous to each other" she tells him that she is "not polite." The theme of this play is simply "hell is other people." During the entire play each characters actions and eccentricities conflict leading to arguments and anguish. Since "nothing was left to chance," fate ultimately brought these people together for the most harsh and merciless torture. Sartre appears to convey that the fate of people is to torment and be tormented by others near us.
Garcin is the first person, other than the valet, that Inez meets in hell. Because she believes that he is "the torturer," Inez's first impression of him is negative. He corrects her and tries to befriend her but she tells him she is "not polite." They do not get along and she makes fun of his cowardice and calls him a "simpleton." Their first dispute is over why they are put together. Although Garcin believes it to be "a pure fluke," but Inez is convinced that "nothing was left to chance," "down to the last detail."
