Airline Hi-jacking
On September 11, 2001, two commercial airlines hit the Pentagon and another toppled the World Trade Center. This is a day that will live in infamy; the freedoms that Americans had once enjoyed were being challenged by a group of cowards. People were plummeting to their deaths, afraid of being burnt alive. Thousands of Americans were incinerated, and debris and ashes covered New York like a blanket of snow. The September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon created a rude awakening for the airline industry and the FAA in the United States. Until that day, airline security in the United States was lax: proper security measures were not being taken on the ground. Employees in the airports were hired through a security company, which the airlines contract, paying the workers minimum wage without benefits. Reports have shown that some United States airports have had a 300 percent overturn rate for ground personnel in the airports. With this high of a turn over, effective training is not given to the employees. As a result, they do not perform their jobs as they should and weapons such as razorblades and box cutters, which were used to hijack airplanes in the September 11th attacks, are allowed through the gates
If federal workers were hired as security personnel, passengers would have more confidence in the safety of airplanes. If people feel safer and purchase more airline tickets, stock in these companies could go up in value and help boost our struggling economy. If the airlines can recover some of the money that was lost due to shutting down the airports for several days after the September 11th attacks, ex-employees could be re-hired because the airlines would have the money available to pay them. Eventually, the economy would start to recover following the attacks. Also, flight staff and passengers would be more protected from being victims of terrorist attacks. The cost of hiring federal employees would be expensive; however, people's lives cannot have a price tag attached to them. The cost would be less then the amount that it will cost to rebuild the damaged parts of New York City, the Pentagon, and pay the workers for cleaning up the rubble from the attacks. The government would have to provide the funding for hiring federal employees at higher wages. The money for these employees might have to be taken from other areas of the budget causing a decrease in funding available for other projects. Currently, the airlines do not have good enough help on the ground that would enforce these strict rules. A solution to this problem would be to hire federal employees, who have had background checks and have been trained by the government to do the baggage checks and work at security checkpoints throughout the terminal. These federal employees would perform the tasks of preventing possible hijackers from boarding a plane. Currently workers are getting paid minimum wage to examine bags and perform security duties. Because this is a low paying job, they do not care about their jobs and don't give it one hund
