Great Expectations
While growing up as an orphan, Pip has a very lonely and difficult childhood. However, many people did help in Pip's development and growth from a boy to a gentlemen. The way Pip is treated and the effects of the actions range from cruel and destructive to beneficial and kind. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Pip's life is shaped by three women: Mrs. Joe, Miss Havisham, and Estella. Even though Mrs. Joe, Pip's sister who raises him, terrorizes him as a boy, she still has a major role in his life. Mrs. Joe brings Pip "up by hand" using physical punishment to discipline him. Many times her wild "ram-pages" are very dangerous and abusive to Pip. She yells, throws objects, and even hits Pip, or anybody else who gets in her way, with her cane. Although this frightens and intimidates Pip, it actually makes him stronger inside. Pip is rarely scared of anything other than the severe treatment he receives fr
om his sister. When Pip is harassed by the convict on the marsh, he fears going home to his sister more than the convict's threat to him. Pip is also not afraid of odd Miss Havisham or Estella, who taunts him. Instead, he is scared that Miss Havisham is going to "complain of him" for not doing what she asks and then he will get in trouble with Mrs. Joe. Mrs. Joe contributes to the bonding between Pip and her husband, Joe. Since she treats Joe "as no more then [Pip's] equal," he experiences the same cruelty Pip does. This causes them to have a very close relationship and they even learn to warn each other before one of Mrs. Joe's outbreaks. Mrs. Joe also helps shape Pip's life enormously by forcing him to play at Miss Havisham's for the first time. Mrs. Joe threatens that "he had better play there," or else she would "work him." Although she does not realize this at the time, it is the best thing that Mrs.
