In the Novel "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck there are two characters named Lennie and George. Lennie is a bit slow and cant understand the complexities of life and George is like Lennies Care taker ever since Lennie's aunt died. In some ways it is good that they be together and in other ways it is better that they of never met eachother. Without Lennie, George has a great chance of being happy and successful. Without George, Lennie has a greater chance of dieing or being locked up in prison.
George and Lennie being together is good because it keeps George out of the whorehouses and Lennie out of the Jail houses. George does Lennies thinking for him and tries to keep him out of trouble. Lennie ,on the other hand, makes George special, "[Lennie] made me seem God damn smart alongside of him...." He adds, "I ain't got no people. I seen the guys that go around on ranches alone. That ain't no good
In Conclusion, it is better that George and Lennie are together so that they can both be happy in other ways. George will be happy long term because of his expieriences with Lennie, and Lennie will be happy short term because if his expierence he has with George before he dies. Either way they may have done something great with there lives separately, but whose to say that George couldn't of become a farm owner or even own a franchise. Whose to say that Lennie might not of over come his touching fear by going to jail a few years and learning good from bad. No one can tell the future.
In many ways it is bad that George and Lennie were together. George would probably be going to whorehouses and would travel around the United States without a worry. George says he could "live so easy"(pg58), He could get a job, earn his money, and spend it on whiskey and a cathouse. Lennie holds George back from achieving his dreams
