Surely one of the greatest ironies of human condition is that color and culture, source of our greatest pride, are also traits that so often foment hatred and propel us into war. There are different causes for discrimination upon different races and biological-ethnical differences. In many cases the main point for the discrimination is a number of people of "this kind" in the society. Usually majority has treated the minority. The extremist treatment has deviant form. One of these forms is called Anti-Semitism.
Everywhere except in the State of Israel, Jews live as members of a minority among members of other faith groups, ethnic groups, and majorities of varying kinds. They have suffered considerably from Anti-Semitism at various points and places, culminating in the destruction of six million of Europe's Jewry in Holocaust between 1939 and 1945. The word "Semitic" was originally applied to all descendants of Shem, the eldest son of the biblical patriarch Noah, and it refers to a group of peoples of southwestern Asia, including both Jews and Arabs. In later usage, it has come to be associated specifically with Jewish people. The word "Anti-Semitism" was coined around 1880 to denote hostility towards Jews only.
