Brave New World Reflection

Brave New World is a very interesting and unique book that is unlike anything I have ever read. Although it is a very strange book, I liked it a lot. I learned a lot while reading it, but even more through our discussions as a class. I also cited connections to the other books we've read this year.

I have learned a lot from Brave New World. This is a very bitter satire that contains very strong points. I noticed some of these points on my own, however I fully understood them after we discussed them as a class. I have noticed throughout this book and throughout the whole year that I learn best from discussions. I think that that is the most enjoyable way to learn. I love the difference of opinions within the classroom. I also liked how we researched on the Internet and then shared what we learned with the class. I also really liked dialogue journals and normal journals too.


The very first journal entry for this book was about Utopias. We wrote about what our Utopias would be like and if they could exist. We then came up with a list of things we would include. Now, after completing the book, I don't think that there could be a Utopia at all. Certain things would be restricted to keep the people in line, however this conformity would create unhappiness. The society would be uninventive and dull. Another thing I wrote about was John, The Savage. I wrote about how complex I think he was. I can see both civility and savageness in him. I think that he can live up to his title. An example of this is when he flipped out at Lenina. I understand why he did this, but it is just so strange to me. However, his gentle side was shown at the hospital when Linda was dying. He is like a little kid. He cannot handle himself at all. Although he can be such a beast, he is actually quite innocent.
