A detailed Summary of The Pardoner's Tale


The Pardoner's Tale began with a group of three young men from Flanders. These three rioters did nothing but engage in irresponsible and sinful behavior. One night, while in a tavern, the three drunkards witnessed a dead man being carried to his grave. When they inquired who the dead man had been, they were told that it was one of their friends who had just been killed by "Death". Once they learn that their friend had not been the only one who had been slain by "Death", they vow to kill "Death" themselves.

On their search for "Death" they run into a poor, old man who, after complaining that "Death" refuses to kill him, informs them that "Death" can be found under a nearby oak-tree. When the men arrive at the oak-tree, instead of finding their enemy, they find unbelievable amounts of gold. They then decide that they will take the gold and divide it equally among the three of them. Their only problem is that they will not be able to being it back to town because many of the town's people will believe the gold to have been stolen.


While telling his tale, the Pardoner would often a times stop and stray from the story that he had been telling to preach again sin. If one paid close attention to the Pardoner's story, one would realize that the only distinction that he made between the three rioters was that the one who had been sent to gather food and drink was the youngest of the three. However, the rest of their characteristics aren't really identified. They are just, all around negative people. This gives minds a the travelers hearing the story a chance to wonder. Since, no sin was specifically identified, the Pardoner is able to condemn a vast array of sins.

As we learned in the beginning of "Canterbury Tales" the Pardoner is a great story teller and he is also a man that many people trust and respect since he is able to make himself seem higher and smarter than almost anyone in the congregation, including the priest.
