Both the books "The first confession" written by O'Conner and the book " A&P" by John Updike reveal many characteristics about the characters inside them. Although Updike and O' Conner employ both direct and indirect characterization methods, they predominantly reveal their characters indirectly.
Although most of the characterization is given indirectly O'Conner and Updike also describe their characters directly. In the beginning of the story, when Updike introduces the three girls (shoppers). We find out that they are "in nothing but bathing suits". It's through the indirect method that both authors give most of their characters characteristics in depth. With direct characterization the author has the right to expose the information he wants to be available to us about the characters. When the method used is indirect characterization, it is told us a little about the character and lets it up to the reader to interpret the rest of the information in the way they want to. Indirectly we see how the character is inside and outside in more depth them we would if the author would just describe them superficially. This is why the main character is always described indirectly since it is the character with the most depth, and the most difficult to comprehend.
