Fahrenheit 451 , and Anthem

Becoming an Individual

In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and Anthem by Ayn Rand, the two main Characters, Guy Montag, and Equality struggle to become free from the society they are living in. In Fahrenheit 451 Guy rebelled against his society's wishes and runs away. He runs away because in his society you cant read books and he chose to read them and he got caught, so he ran away. This was when Guy really looked inside of him and noticed how he has changed and became a different person. In the novel Anthem the main character Equality goes through just about the same changes. Equality rebelled against his society, and ran away to become an individual, because in his society you are not allowed to have knowledge and you are on the same level as everyone else. So Equality ran away and he went through a "rebirth" just like Guy Montag where Equality discovers who he really is and how he has changed from being just like everyone else to being his own person an individual. Then Equality goes through is a recreation of identity where he changes his name from Equality to Prometheus. The two main characters go on a wild ride going through three similar main stages of change where

In conclusion the Book Fahrenheit 451 and Anthem and the characters that are in these books really go through three main stages that get them to become an individual. They both rebel against their societies to become free and to do what they wanted to do. Then they went through a rebirth discovering whom they really were inside, and they recreated an identity that will stay forth to become a new person inside. These two strong compelling novels of literature really go past the subject and make one think on becoming an individual and to stick up for yourself and strive for what you want to do and not to be the same as everyone else.

both the characters do an act of rebellion towards their communities. Equality and Guy then both run away and went through a rebirth of becoming an individual. Then lastly these two daring characters went through a recreation of identity to fulfill themselves in being a new person an individual.

I shall live here in my own house. I shall take my food from the earth by the toil of my own hands. I shall learn many secrets from my books. Through the years ahead I shall rebuild the achievements of the past, and open the way to carry them further, the achievements which are open to me, but closed forever to my brothers, for their minds are shackled to the weakest and dullest ones among them.(99-100)

After Guy and Equality ran away they go through a spiritual and an emotional change. On their journey to becoming individual the two characters go through a change, a rebirth that makes them realize and understand the benefits of being an individual. In Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag figures out that it was for his own good to run away from his society and to do and take part in what he believed in: "He felt as if he had left a stage behind and many actors. He felt as if he had left the great seance and all the murmuring ghosts. He was moving on from an unreality that was frightening into a reality that was unreal because it was new."(140). Guy was nervous taking a new path and being "reborn" as a new person. But he was also intrigued to take over a new leaf and start over and to do what he wants to do and what he believes in. Equality in Anthem just about did the same thing. Equality took over a new leaf and started over after he ran away and took his "rebirth" to an understanding where how great it felt to be an individual and not be the same as
