A Fable

There once was a girl who had two cats. These two cats were very different from each other. One cat was young and sleek. He had far-reaching whiskers and a long, lush coat. He was known throughout the neighborhood for his beautiful coat and his prowess as a hunter. The other cat was rather old. She was not quite as beautiful as she was in her youth. In fact, she was rather overweight. Despite her age and obesity, she was known as the sweetest cat around. She would never pass up a scratch behind her ear from a person.

The girl adored both of her cats. She always made sure that she showed each cat an equal amount of affection. She did not want either of the cats to feel that she loved the other more. If one cat sat in her lap for a while and allowed her to pet it, she would make sure to pet the other cat soon after. When it was time for the cats to be fed, the girl would feed a different cat first each time. If she spoke sweetly to one cat, she would always follow by adoring the other cat too. The girl believed that all of the special measures she took ensured that the cats would not compete for her affections.

Both of these cats loved the girl fiercely. The girl was unaware of the conflicts that constantly raged between the two

The girl was happy to be home. She was very pleased to see both of the cats waiting for her on the front porch. The cats sat up tall and puffed out their chests proudly as the girl walked towards them. Their gifts were on the ground in front of them. When the girl looked down and saw the gifts her cats had placed on the porch for her, she let out a shriek of horror. She ran past the cats and into the house. She slammed the door behind her. Both cats spent that entire night outside wondering why the girl did not care for either of their beautiful gifts.

"Rabbits! You are far too young to be trying to catch those. I am sure they are far too fast for you to catch," the old cat spread her whiskers out proudly as she contemplated the great wisdom she had gained from her long life.

"Well, you should not have stayed outside so late. You know how hard it is for her to fall back asleep after you wake her up yelling outside the window at ridiculously late hours!"

The moral: Beauty is defined differently by everyone

The young cat then whacked the old cat on the head. The old cat smacked the young cat right on his nose. They chased each other around the house. They angrily called out to each other as they dashed about. The noise they made eventually woke up the lazy old man. Both cats raced to the door when they heard the lazy old man leave his bedroom. As he passed the cats on his way to the kitchen, they both demanded that he promptly open the door for them. The door was opened and their hunt began.

She grinned knowin
