Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was an extraordinary novelist, as he was able to capture the minds of his readers by bringing the character of Sherlock Holmes to life. Although Doyle was able to create a life for the detective unlike any other, there are many similarities and routines in the way that he told each of his stories. These things are not necessarily bad as they add to the reality of Detective Sherlock Holmes. Some things that are common amongst Doyle's novels are: the initial setting of the novel, the way that the antagonist seems to outsmart Holmes and the way that Holmes is always able to outsmart the antagonist, solve the crime and come out victorious. In the novels read - The Hound of Baskervilles and The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone - these aspects showed to be the base of the novel. Although there are many similarities among Doyle's writings, they seem to build an even more interesting and complex story leaving the reader captivated in every word. Another aspect common amongst the novels read was how the antagonist of the novel always seems to be 'one up' on Sherlock Holmes until the missing piece of the puzzle is found. In The Hound of Baskervilles, Sherlock is trying to track the hound that is killing off each remaining member of the Baskerville family in harmony with the myth of the Baskerville Hound. He has figured out that it is not a hound, but one of the neighbours of the Baskerville Mansion. When Holmes is asked whether he can shed any light upon the matter, he replies with: "One cannot always have the success for which one hopes. An investigator needs facts and not legends or rumours. It has not been a satisfactory case." In The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone, a thief has stolen the crown jewel from that of Lord Cantlemere. Sherlock had figured out who the thieves were, but could not locate the Mazarin stone. When Dr. Watson asks Holmes why he does not arrest the criminals, he replies: "I've cast my net and I have my fish. But I have not got the stone. What is the use of taking them? We can make the world a better place by laying them by the heels. But that is not what I am out for. It's the stone I want." In both these novels, it seemed that the great detective had been outsmarted and he was going to be unable to solve the case.
