A detailed Summary of Frankenstein

1) The author's topic subject was on Science Fiction and Horror. The entire story was fiction and some parts had horror parts to it as well.

2) A man named Robert Walton is preparing for a long expedition in the Arctic in his boat. During the trip he sees Victor Frankenstein, then Frankenstein begins his story. Victor's passion for the sciences is very strong, and he had studied in his youth. Victor's mother died when he was age 17, and that is when he decides that he will discover a way to rid the world of sickness and death, so people could stay with each other forever. Victor went on to medical school, and after many intense years of research and study Victor gathers enough parts from cadavers to begin creating life which he believes will be much better than our existence. Victor is a likable character because his intentions are good; all he wanted to do was conquer death and illnesses. Victor finally creates life in the form of a man; with many parts sewn together it has made his creation hideous. Victor, not believing he had done, became frightened and ran away from the "monster". Victor, who made judgment by relating ugliness with evil, automatically rejects the monster. Later, Victor's brother, William, is found

7) This author was so descriptive in this book, I could tell people's emotion by reading her work. A good example is, "...but I had hardly placed my foot within the door the children shrieked, and one of the women fainted. The whole village was roused..."(108). From that quote I could feel the emotional distress the monster had when he was rejected from the village. "...by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated it's limbs... "(50), in this quote I can actually see the monster taking its first sight, breath, and moving it's limbs for the first time.

11) In the beginning and the end there were a series of letters from Robert Walton to his sister. When he finds Victor, Victor starts to narrate his life story. The way the author chose was perfect. It perfectly conveyed the story. I think the author chose it to be in first person so we can actually hear his thoughts and fully understand every thing he does.

5) The time of this book was in the eighteenth century and this book took place in many countries all around Europe. Victor was raised in Geneva, Switzerland. He attended college at the University of Ingolstat. After the murder of Justine Moritz he went to the Swiss Alps to clear his mind. Before he was going to start on the second monster he went to London to renew his scientific knowledge and begins to build the second monster in a village in Scotland. The place of the story did not make it the least bit confusing, but the time period sure did. Because of the time period, the language was a lot harder to understand.

3) Mary Shelly did move the plot fast enough to hold the readers attention. While not fast enough to give the entire plot away. The book did show Victor Frankenstein's physical and mental changes. It shows the many times where he becomes sick. Such as when he first creates the monster, he feels so sick that he immediately runs out of the room in disgust and stays in sickness for weeks.

6) Victor Frankenstein - The protagonist and narrator of the main portion of the story. Studying in Ingolstadt, Victor discovers the secret of life and creates an intelligent but ugly monster, from which he is repulsed with. Victor keeps his creation of the monster a secret, feeling guilty and ashamed as he realizes how helpless he is to prevent the monster from ruining his life and the lives of others.
