Scout
1) Does Scout like school? What are specific reasons behind her feelings? In my opinion, Scout does not like school. Firstly, Scout greatly values spending time with her father reading books. And School almost took that away from her and at a time, she was greatly upset. This made her so upset that she threatened not to go to school. Also, with school, Scout feels that it doesn't challenge her mind enough and finds it boring. "The second grade was grim...not until one reached the sixth grade that one learned anything of value." This quote shows Scout's attitude towards school, which are thoughts of school being boring and not of a challenge. To add to this, the kids at school are not that kind to Scout as they tease her about her father defending a Negro. Even though Scout would like to fight the kids, she is asked to hold back by her father. As many negative actions are linked to school, this makes Scout dislike it more and more. Reading with her father was almost taken away from her, and kids like to tease her about her father defending Tom Robinson. Also, to add to this, she also feels that school does not challenge her enough . With all of this put together, this would make a negative effect on school and this is why
8) Why does Atticus defend Tom Robinson? Summarize the defence he presents. What is the outcome of the trial? Is the verdict just? Explain. There was a mix of reactions when Atticus chose to defend Tom Robinson. Firstly, kids in the school yard reacted to this as a negative thing. They teased and provoked Scout about Atticus defending a black man. I like to believe that no one is born raciest so most likely, the kids got the effect of defending a black man is wrong from their parents. Also on page 76, Cecil Jacob quotes, "my folks said your daddy was a disgrace an' that nigger oughta hang from the water tank." This clearly shows that parent of Cecil Jacob were against Atticus defending Tom Robinson and they can also represent the majority of Maycomb's attitude. To add to this, I don't think Cecil Jacob knows what he is talking about because he is a young kid, that is in grade two, and he actually has no opinion and he is just repeating the ideas of his parents. Cecil Jacob could be a symbol of the population of Maycomb county, because many of the people don't think outside the box, as it shows in the verdict of Tom Robinson. Many of the people probably don't feel racism but since it was the norm back then that blacks were low class so no one wanted to change and they just went with the flow. Even though there was negativity towards Atticus defending Tom Robinson, there were some white people that supported him. For example, Mrs. Dubose, Judge Taylor and Mr Underwood. For example, Mr. Underwood supported Atticus by protecting him when the mob came to lynch Tom Robinson. Judge Taylor supported Atticus because he gave him the job of defending Tom Robinson because Judge Taylor knew that Atticus would not refuse and would try his best because he was a fair man. When Jem was sad that Atticus lost his trial, Mrs Dubose tried to explain to him how he should be proud of Atticus. This clearly shows her support towards Atticus.
