Freedom

A detailed Summary of Freedom

We as Americans have many freedoms. At the same time they are very much limited. On the surface we see many freedoms, then when we get down to it there are rules that we must follow in order to achieve these freedoms. Age is one limitation that we have on our freedom, as well as many other hidden factors.

On the surface we have the Bill of Rights that gives us the right to many freedoms. At the same time we are told not to do some things because we don't have the right to. Take the freedom of speech for example, and the many restrictions that come with that. I can't just go out and say exactly what I want because it might offend someone. I can then be taken to court for slander. Being almost 18 I have many things that I am not able to do even though society says I am an adult. I can't go out and do many things that people who are considered "adults" are able to do. I am still in school so I have to abide by those rules and there are some things that I can't say that I might wish to. I feel that school is nothing like the real world, because in the real world a lot of those rules do not apply. This restricts my freedoms as an American citizen. I am like a slave to what the social masses deem to be right. I am

I feel that what I do outside of school, for the most part as long as it is not illegal, isn't any of their business.

In conclusion, I want to state that with every freedom that we have there are restrictions and exceptions. It all depends on who we are, where we are, and what the circumstances are surrounding the particular freedom. Age seems to be more of a factor than it should be. I truly don't think that we, as Americans, fully experience the freedoms that we are promised. We only experience the limited versions of these freedoms that we are taught by society.

Another story that has to do with the freedoms that we are promised shows that they might be promised, but not always given. I have the right to do with my body what I want, and speak what I want, with the understanding that it cannot cause harm to myself or anyone else. I know this may sound completely out of line, but to me this was something that I felt very strongly about. My father has been very sick most of my life and I have always wanted to help him. There are the rules that you cannot donate blood until you are 17. When I turned 17 I was very excited. I thought that now since I am my father's child, and considered an adult by society; I could donate my kidney so that he could live a normal life. It would most likely be almost a perfect match. I found out soon enough that I would not be allowed to do this. I am not old enough to make an educated choice about my own body. I have researched this subject, and in doing many reports on kidney transplants, I feel that I know the risks involved. I was so put out by this that I asked them, if I could donate when I was 18. The answer was "No". This shocked me even more. I sort of understood at 17 why they would not allow me to do this even though that at 17 I am legally responsible for myself. If I commit a crime, I can be tried as an adult, and serve an adult sentence. Yet, it is funny that when it comes to something that I feel really strongly about, that is not going to hu
