Abe

We have all heard of President Abraham Lincoln. He was the 16th president of the United States. He is one of the best greatest men in American history. He was a humane, farsighted statesman in his lifetime, but when he died he became a legend and folk hero.

Abraham Lincoln 's ancestry on his father's side has been traced to far back to Samuel Lincoln. Samuel come from England and moved to Massachusetts. His ancestors then became pioneers. They moved from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania, then to Virginia. Lincoln's father was born Thomas Lincoln in Virginia in 1778. In 1786 a Native American killed Thomas Lincoln's father.

Abraham's father became a carpenter. He never lacked the basic necessities of life. Abraham's father was a very good man. He never missed paying his taxes or denied jury duty and militia duty when called.

On June 12, 1806 Thomas Lincoln married Nancy hanks. Little is known about her. She was completely illiterate and signed her a name with a X. after marriage the Lincoln's moved to Mill Creek in Hardin County Kentucky. Their Thomas Lincoln earned his living as a carpenter and handyman. In 1807 Sarah Lincoln was born.

By the time Lincoln was 19 years old, he reached full height of 6 feet and 4 inches. He was lean and muscular, with long arms and big hand. Even though he had remarkable strength, he never liked farm work. He then worked in a general store. A neighbor said that "Abe was awful lazy, he would laugh and talk and crack jokes and tell stories all the time".

In 1840, Lincoln met a cultured, high-strung Kentucky woman named Mary Todd. After a courtship, they were married on November 4, 1842.

He was encouraged to study lay by John T. Stuart.

In 1843 the Lincoln's moved to Springfield. Of their four boys, only the oldest reached adulthood. He was born in 1843 and died in 1926. Edward barker Lincoln was born in 1846 and died at age four. William was born in 1850 and died shortly before his 12th birthday. Lincoln favorite son, Thomas was born in 1853 and died at age 18.

When Lincoln returned to Salem he only had 2 weeks to prepare for the election. Lincoln went through a lot in that two weeks. He visited farmers at heir homes. Nevertheless he was defeated. There were 13 county candidates running for four legislative seats. Lincoln finished eighth.
