Bruce Lee

For hundreds of years, martial arts have been benefiting millions of people all over the world. In China, Buddhist monks, known as the Shaolin, originally developed this art. They invented it to help train themselves physically and mentally. It taught people self-defense, to be disciplined and strong-minded, as well as helping people get their body into shape. Since then, martial arts have been taught all over the world in many different styles. In the media today, we find martial arts almost everywhere, in the movies, TV shows, as well as video games. Many martial artists throughout the world are famous movie stars, but one man will forever be remembered as the greatest martial arts star of all time. Bruce Lee is considered to be one of the greatest martial artists as well as philosophers of all time. He has touched many people's lives even after his death.

Bruce Lee "was born in the Year of the Dragon, in the Hour of the Dragon, on November 27, 1940" in Jackson Street Hospital in San Francisco, California. "Bruce's father, Lee Hoi Chuen was a well-known performer with the Cantonese Opera Company of Hong Kong, and was on the American tour" in San Francisco at that time while his wife, Grace, was pregnant with Bruce. Br

Since the streets of Kowloon were very rough and full of poverty, there were many street gangs of young Chinese boys. Bruce hung around with the wrong crowd and soon enough, as a teenager, he was involved with a gang and engaged into many street fights. When Bruce attended La Salle College in Hong Kong, there was much rivalry between the Hong Kong Chinese and the British children at King George V School. One day, after school, Bruce and a group of his friends went to the British school and taunted the English boys, which provoked them to a fight. Bruce came home to his mother and asked his mother that he wanted to be trained in the martial arts. He said that he was being bullied at school and wanted to learn how to defend himself properly. His father suggested practicing Tai Chi Chuan, which is a kung fu style that utilizes slow movements and techniques, usually learned by elderly. Bruce tried it at first, but he felt it wasn't effective for real-life situations. Bruce's mother felt sympathetic for him and agreed to pay the tuition for real kung fu training. Bruce started training under Sifu (Sifu means "master" or "teacher" in Cantonese) Yip Man, who was a master in the Wing Chun style." Ever since Bruce started training, he was obsessed with kung fu. He was full of energy and he was always training hard. Kung fu made a great impact on him. Everything he did was related to kung fu, even when he was eating. "He'd pound his hands on a stool to toughen up his hands and strengthen his muscles. While walking, he would through punches and kicks in the air hitting trees. Because of this, his family gave him another nickname known as Mo si tung, which meant, never sits still (26-27).

The beginning of Bruce's professional movie career all started when he was doing a "demonstration at a Long Beach karate tournament in 1964 (JKD)." Bruce had developed his own style of kung fu known as "Jeet Kune Do, which in Cantonese literally translates into The Way of the Intercepting Fist (Lee TBLS 44)." Bruce bragged about how martial arts nowadays are too old fashioned and not effective. Spectators told Bruce to prove that his new art, Jeet Kune Do, is much more effective than the other arts, so he then challenged the whole room that he would beat anybody in a minute or less. One man volunteered to fight Bruce. The fight began and as Bruce had said, in less than a minute, Bruce defeated his opponent. Amazed by Bruce's demonstration, a man by the name of William Dozier offers Bruce a role in the TV series, The Green Hornet as the Green Hornet's sidekick, Kato. Bruce amazed audiences with his great martial arts skill as Kato (Biography). Unfortunately, after only a few months, the show was canceled. Many reruns of the series were still being aired though (Lee TBLS 74).

Although Bruce was trying to better himself as a person, he still had the hunger to fight with others. Bruce was challenged by students from other kung fu schools and being the fight-hungry man he was, he accepted. During a fight one time though, he fought with rage and almost killed another boy. As a result, he got in trouble by the police. Bruce's parents sent him back to America hoping that he would be able to change himself and learn from struggles in the real world. (Biography)

Bruce Lee touched the hearts of many people all over the world, through his movies, as well as his teachings. Because of him, he changed the way martial arts are perceived now today. In the past, it was seen as violent acts instead of something that was very philosophical as well. He was also the first to share the secrets of the Chinese to the Americans who had been their enemies for many years. If it wasn't for Bruce, many of these secrets would still be a secret today, and there would be much more barriers of racism. Bruce is a perfect example of how yin and yang work together in harmony. He will always be remembered in the hearts of people throughout the worl
