German Painting after WWI. And in the 1920?s

Q: Utilizing class notes and perhaps resources of your own, write a 1,000-2,000 work dealing with each of the following artists in the period directly following World War 1 [1918-]:

German art movement of the 1920s began after the end of WWI. There where many artists in this period but the main chief painters of the movement were George Grosz and Otto Dix. They created styles of sharp realism and protest that mirrored the disillusionment following World War I. New objectivity retained the intense emotionality of earlier movements in German art, but it left the symbolism of expressionism for true pleasant explanation. Also Max Beckmann produced works in a related, channel during this time period.

Otto Dix born in 1891 and died in 1969, was an artist whose work defined the nature of New Objectivity clearly. After WWI Dix developed left wing views and his paintings and drawings became increasingly political. Like other German artists such as John Heartfield and George Grosz, Dix was angry about the way that the wounded and crippled ex-soldiers were treated in Germany which was shown in many of his pieces. His war paintings were appalling descriptions of indescribable horrors


Max Beckmann born in 1884 and died in 1950 was an artist who is widely regarded as the greatest native-born German painter of his generation, yet his achievement is often deformed. Commonly labeled an Expressionist, he found the selection detesting. Indeed, during the 1920s most critics regarded Beckmann's art as anti-Expressionist, as a emotional and stylistic excesses. His painting was seen as essentially Realist, tracing the curve of Germany's spiritual course through the change of the Weimar Republic. Accordingly, in this spirit he is today generally grouped with the German New Objectivity? artists of the 1920s, such as Dix and Grosz. But this view, too, constitutes a reductive distortion of Beckmann's artistic achievement. Beckmann is a artist that sets him apart from his German contemporaries. He is an artist that is in the ?new sense," he also is the conscious shaper of the transcendent idea. Which he feels is the work of art that becomes a symbol and source of power for the partly still silent power in the responsible human being. He painted freely and he probably painted more self-portraits than any other artist did. He painted subjects from the entertainment world, many portraits of family and friends, and countless allegorical compositions with characters symbolic of ancient myths. Beckmann used various modern devices, seeing his subjects from multiple points of view, for instance. As the other entire artist where effected by WWI it was inevitable that Beckmann would be as well. It is a matter of record that he was both stimulated and psychologically wounded by the horrors he witnessed while serving as a member of the German army field hospital corps. This horror is reflected in his paintings. Two main paintings of Beckmann are ?The Night? painted in 1918 to 1919 and ?Self Portrait? painted in 1927. ?The Night? is a drama of torture, cruelty and sympathy of the disturbance of the time and predicting of the legalized bondage of the 1930s. Where as ?Self Portrait? is Beckmann posed in a tuxedo very much as an arrogant man of the world.
