Clones-- Should We
You did not read the title wrong. It is clones, not clowns. And this is no laughing matter. As technology advances and scientists and engineers become more and more clever, we must be careful to not take God's place in creation by making copies of ourselves. Webster defines a clone as "the aggregate of the asexually produced progeny of an individual" or "an individual grown from a single somatic cell of its parent and genetically identical to it." Reproductive cloning is an "insult to the dignity of human life that pertains to all creatures in the image of God" (Voice).Human cloning will be the target of discussion, and we will focus on reproductive cloning and embryo cloning. Embryo cloning is a technique used by researchers and animal breeders to split a single embryo into two or more embryos that will all have the exact same genetic information. Reproductive cloning involves destroying and removing the nucleus of the egg cell species that is to be cloned. Then, a cell is taken from the human to be cloned and the nucleus of that cell is removed and transplanted into the egg cell that doesn't have a nucleus (Animal). The major problem of ethics comes into play when scientists get the idea that they
can reproduce a human being. Some Christians claim that the scientists have wrong moral intentions. These wrong intentions are cloning for personal benefit or to gain superiority. When one hears the words 'human cloning,' his first thoughts are usually 'yeah right.' Although many people are skeptical of reproducing a human being by means of cloning, we can benefit from the advantages of this operation. Imagine having the brother or sister you've always wanted. Imagine suffering from liver cancer and not having a worry in the world because you know a brand new organ has your name written all over it. Cloning has been the topic of recent science fiction stories but with the rapidly increasing technology, our fantasies will become realities. Iowa Democratic Senator Thomas Harkin is another pro-cloning advocate. He speaks feverishly on the issue: Dr. Seed lists numerous advantages to human cloning. His main motive behind cloning is a "legitimate treatment of infertility" (humancloning). Today "1 in every 12 couples" is affected by infertility (Benefits). Cloning allows these infertile couples to reproduce and enjoy the blessings of parenthood. He also states that cloning can provide a replacement for a lost sibling or child due to an accidental tragedy, "unleash a torrent of research," and restore youth in elderly people. The "torrent of research" through cloning would allow scientists to understand if such traits as obesity and homosexuality are really genetically linked or if those conditions are merely learned behavior. Seed believes cloning will allow a person to start his life over back at the age of zero, back to the cell stage (Benefits). Cloning also takes away any chance of individuality. People naturally have certain characteristics and abilities that set them apart from everyone else. "Opponents [of cloning] argue that children may suffer a diminished sense of individuality and personal autonomy" (HumanCloning). Cloning makes an organism that has exactly the same genetic makeup as the parent. Therefore, the clone has lost his uniqueness. "The clone could be labeled as a commodity, and not a miracle given to us by God" (Stalzer). God put everyone on this Earth for a reason, and that reason was not to be exactly like another person. "Reproductive cloning would be an insult to the dignity of human life that appropriately pertains to us as creatures in the image of God" (Voice). Being in the image of God means we were created to reflect His image on other people. That is, we are to share our love, have compassion, and be in relationships with the people around us. If cloning is an insult to the dignity of human life, then cloning is also and insult to the family. This has enormous potential for good, there should be no limits on human knowledge, none whatever. To those like President Clinton who say we can't play God, I say OK, fine, you can take your side alongside Pope Paul V who in 1616 tried to stop Galileo, they accused Galileo of trying to play God too. [...] I don't think cloning is demeaning to human nature, to attempt to limit human knowledge is demeaning. I
