AIDS in Africa
The Monetary Value of AIDS in AfricaCountries, companies, and people are now uniting to fight AIDS, the scourge of Africa. Until recent years, Africa was a nation of death with no hope of regaining control. However in recent months, a swell of support has come to combat the AIDS/HIV struggle. Many people and the companies they work for have donated their time and money to the valiant effort. Not only that, but whole countries have brought forth their power to give money, to educate, and pay for treatment. Millions of Dollars have been raised to fight the epidemic. Bill Gates, Microsoft Chairman, has made the latest donation of one hundred million dollars. This of course is pocket change to Gates who is probably worth twenty-five times that! But, a donation is a donation; no matter who the person is or how much it is worth. These particular donations have of course gone to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. Several donations of massive amounts have been flying around to help. With the Gates' one hundred million comes the US's two hundred and France's one hundred twenty-seven. All this in offerings to Africa comes to four hundred twenty-seven million. Amazingly enough, this 427 million seems to be petty cash, w
hen care for the continent of Africa is a suggested 7 to 10 billion. All this cash will apparently pay for all needed programs for retrovirals, education, and prevention of AIDS. We can respect ourselves to say that we, the US, are helping other countries to combat illness and save mankind. In a way, we are helping, as we try to provide for these people and due what we deem possible. If we really wanted to help, we would pay for these services, and not help, but give the Africans what they needed. There is a very big difference between want and need. The US wants the money we get from sales to African governments and the African governments need the goods and services to save their people. Even if there was a cure for AIDS, it would not save Africa. The disease could never leave the continent simply because we wouldn't let it. How else are we supposed to buy new bombs to blow up Afghanistan? Although this assumption is startling, it can be accepted to be true to some extent. There are twenty six million people in Africa infected with the AIDS virus. This is seventy percent of the world's thirty six million infected. These drug companies are making money off everyone of these people that are receiving care. Now, not all of the people, in fact, few can afford drugs if they were straight out of a pharmacy. Organizations like the American Red Cross provide for most of the care. We and the government pay for agencies like the Red Cross, so we step yet again to look at the whole picture. Drug companies receive the mone
