January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park New York, a man was born. A man that would become a great champion, leading his country through many dilemmas, his name was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Who is Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a president, as most people would respond when I say his name. Yes, a president, but also a leader, a genius, a hero, and an idol, all of which are associated with greatness. For one to be great they must correspond with all of the criteria listed below. Greatness is more than a title, it is something inside everyone that can only be reached by following these criteria. * One must overcome and learn from difficulties they have suffered. * One must have dignity and strength. * One must rise to his challenges. * One must be respectful and open-minded. * One must comfort and provide for others. His wife, Eleanor, said, "I think probably the thing that took most courage in his life was his mastery and his meeting of polio. I never heard him complain." Roosevelt rose to all the challenges he encountered in his life. Polio, the Depression, and now World War II. In 1940, Nazi Germany conquered Western Europe and posed a threat to Americans. The United States was eighteenth in military power with 500,000 men in the Army while Germany had over six million men. Even in these grimmest times, the President was certain that he could meet this difficulty and his confidence again assured the American people. Through the turmoil of the worst days of both the Depression and World War II, another central quality of Roosevelt's character came into play : to relax, to cast off his worries, to enjoy himself in the company of his friends, family, and associates. His ability to provide comfort for himself and others replenished their energy keeping Roosevelt's administration strong throughout his presidency. Every night Roosevelt followed an extraordinary ritual, he would host a one hour cocktail party for his workers and associates. His friends were finally able to take a break from the stress of their important work to have some laughs and discuss simpler things such as movies. Roosevelt also comforted himself to take his mind off work, he relaxed by playing poker games, solitaire, and even taking long fishing trips. Roosevelt would also visit his boyhood home in Hyde Park, New York to escape the pressures of his work, in fact over two hundred times throughout his presidency.
