Death of Salesman part one

1. Well, dear, life is a casting off. It's always that way.

* Circumstance: Willy is realizing the reality of life. He is mad at Biff because he feels that Biff is wasting his life, and making no money.

* Linda: Reassures him that is the way life is, but then Willy responds "No, no, some people-some people accomplish something." He is angry at Biff for lack of accomplishments.

* Significance: Brings out some of Linda's characteristics: How realistic and patient she is.

* Signifies how easy Willy looses his temper.

2. To suffer fifty weeks of the year for the sake of two week vacation, when all you really desire is to be outdoors, with your short off.

* Circumstance: Biff is confused about what the future is and what he is supposed to want.

* Significance: Shows that Biff is giving up. He held many job positions, but haven't found the perfect one yet. From what I am understanding Biff desires to be outdoors and be his own boss, he wants to be an entrepreneur.

3. You know how honest I am, but it's like this girl, see. I hate myself for it. Because I don't want the girl, and still take it and...I love it.


* Circumstance: Charley offers a job to Willy, but he is too proud to take it saying: "don't insult me". Charley tells him to take it ease.

* Circumstance: Linda is talking to Biff about his manners towards his father. He tells him; if you're not going to respect him don't bother visiting. Biff tells her "stop making excuses for him! He always, always wiped the floor with you. Never had an ounce of respect for you.

* Significance: Signifies that Biff is not happy with his life, and feels that he is wasting it.

6. I can park my car in any street in New England, and the cops protect it like their own.

* Circumstance: Will is encouraging his sons to never fight fair with strangers, which is very wrong. He is teaching his children the think win-lose.
