Emily Dickinson

Every stanza of the poem, ?The birds...? reveals the poet?s perception of admiration; her use of stylistic devices such as diction and imagery convey her perception of the birds? song.

The author begins the first stanza with diction relating to time. She clearly states ?the birds began at four o?clock, their period for dawn? which efficiently places the birds? song at morning. ? Period could refer to either time or musical arrangement, and by saying period she could be stressing the fact that the birds? time for song is limited. She ends the first stanza with ?music numerous as space?neighboring as noon?. She hears the birds? song, which apparently surrounds her-- taking up her space. However, the birds may be as far away as noon is from 4 in the morning. She exposes a spiritual omnipresence in the birds? song.

Furthermore, the second stanza compares their song to water. Perhaps this comparison ties into the author?s veneration for the tranquility these birds welcome the sun with. She begins this stanza describing the intensity of the sound and the numerous birds producing it. She uses diction with words such as ?force?; a metaphor relating the number of birds to a multitude she ?could not count?. Maybe the birds are a stru

Finally, in the last two stanzas, her diction clearly expresses the awe, but also remorse for the neglected birds. ?By six?, introduces once again time and portrays the image of morning now begun, the sun starts to rise and early morn fades. In line 18, she says ?no tumult there had been?. I believe this means the birds try to overtake the morning. They fulfill their purpose, but achieved no chaos to gain more esteem than the day. She makes use of water again as a metaphor relating to the bird?s melody, a ?flood?, that has now subsided. The ?band? which produces a lot of sound, parallels her use of ?flood??a comparison again between music and water. The ?sun engrossed the east?, morning has come and the birds cannot compete no matter how hard they try to ?overtake the morn? as stated in line 12. The use of personification in line 22, ?day controlled the world?, shows how the birds and their song no longer bear control. Perhaps this man?s preoccupation with the day and complete ignorance of the beauty in which he lives, ??miracle that introduced?Forgotten, as fulfilled.? It is apparent that she see the birds as separate and possibly symbolic of a spiritual, beautiful world?one in which man (whom she pays no sympathy to in this poem) se
