Serial Killers

Over the course of the past century, violent crimes and murderers have become more common in society due to the exposure received from media and the increase in public violence. Acts of vengeance are often linked to an individual's desire to reduce or relieve their stress. The offenders of these crimes are often said to initiate their own pleasure from the sufferance of others. Within the past century, the number of documented serial killers - individuals who murder predatorily in distinct patterns or often - has been on the rise; however, many of these attackers have certain mental and psychological problems that could help police in understanding, identifying, tracking, and capturing these predators or even preventing them from striking.

According to professional profilers, the average serial killer is usually a white male from a lower to middle class background, and is aged in his twenties or thirties. Many were abused by parents or were adopted. As a child, the typical serial killer often set fires, tortured animals and wet their beds. (Pienciak, 1996, 94). Some mothers link sexuality with death

Recently, scientists have been paying more attention to the brain and genetic makeup of serial killers. They hope that this research will help them to understand what makes a serial killer lash out and what possible clues are available in comprehending his/her thought process. The tests that these scientists have performed are showing that the nervous system of psychopaths show uncontrollable aggression. The hypothalamus

regulates the hormonal system and emotions and can be damaged through malnutrition or injury. The part of the brain associated with emotion and motivation is known as the limbic brain. When this part of the brain is damaged, the individual loses control over primary emotions such as fear and rage. The temporal lobe is easily injured, since it is located where the skull bone is the thinnest. Any injury here can create lesions, which cause forms of amnesia and epileptic seizures.

of the old saying 'the devil made me do it'." (Rossler, 1993, 49). At best, a criminal who creates an alter ego can hope for a mental institution instead of death row. Serial killers have also used schizophrenia as a debatable excuse.

The triads of criminal behaviour (animal cruelty, fire starting, and bedwetting) are all great indicators of future violence. The majority of documented serial killers have experienced at least two of the three warning signs. Torturing animals is a disturbing sign that individuals should be aware and concerned of. Animals are often used as practice for killing humans. Pyromania is often a sexually stimulating activity for serial

Serial killers are difficult to identify because of their assimilation into society as normal, productive individuals. Characteristically, they are charming, nicely dressed, polite and courteous individuals. Serial killers are diverse in their roles in society. They can be found as members of churches, mall employees, suburbanites, or walk amongst others in the streets. They are usually knowledgeable as to gaining the trust and confidence of their victims, or how to stalk and methodically plan their attacks. Professionals argue that due to their psychopathic nature, serial killers do not know how to feel sympathy for others. When they are caught serial killers will pretend to suffer from multiple personalities, schizophrenia, or being prone to blackouts - anything that avoids responsibility.
