Brahmaputa River :managed?

One of the great rivers of Asia, the Brahmaputra starts from the slopes of Kailash in Northern Tibet and ends at the Bay of Bengal. The river is both a blessing and a curse to the people of Assam. Every year during the monsoon it bursts out of its wide, shallow channel into the flood plain, and then leaves amazingly fertile land in its wake. During the dry winter months the Brahmaputra (Red River) turns into a flood and during the rainy summers the river forms into a majestic river system. The Assamese call it "Luit" (silt) and call themselves "Luitporias" (means the bond between the river and the people.) Social and economic development in Bangladesh is tangled with the availability of the country's natural resources. Land and water are the most vital sources and the most difficult to manage. Many rivers in Bangladesh cause several hazards during flooding, while land is limited. Surface water pollution holds back the country's development. It is


On the other hand, Brahmaputra's floods are important to the region. Floods leave a very fertile soil where farmers cultivate groundnut, potato, vegetables and other crops. Many people also built houses by riverbed and graze animals. Most of the time the floods are helpful although in some years the floods are more extensive and these catastrophic events destroy crops, damage property and bring misery and disease to the people. Protein (85%) intake from fish, which live on the floodplain, is a very important source of food and income for the poor and landless people. The population of Bangladesh is rising at about 2.5% per year and the main investment is in farming. Managing the river could be expensive, something that a third world country can't afford. Government can educate people about safety during the floods and they could start predicting it. These facts make it inevitable that the damage done by future catastrophic floods will be even wors
