In the book Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes, a retarded man named Charlie Gordon was given a chance to become a genius through an operation. Charlie Gordon was the subject of an experiment that increases the intelligence. The experiment worked and Charlie Gordon became a genius. But he had a lot of emotional problems and realized how badly he had been treated. At the end, he became retarded again So, was Charlie Gordon better off having the operation or not? I'm not really sure.
